Living Legends: Back-to-Homeschooling Sale!

Happy Back-to-Homeschooling!

I’m busy writing more posts to help you homeschool foreign languages, but wanted to pop in briefly to let you know that my curriculum, Living Legends: Latin America is on sale through midnight on Monday, August 29th.

What will I find in Living Legends?

I’m so glad you asked!

Living Legends is a literature-based curriculum designed to immerse elementary-aged kids in the language and cultures of Latin America (my specialty!).

It includes 18 weeks of lesson plans centered around excellent, authentic picture books, along with extension activities in art, music, poetry, history, and geography.

Living Legends is written in English, but the curriculum itself is “flexibly bilingual.” The picture books I’ve chosen are all available in English, and some are also available in Spanish, so you can use them in the languages that your family is most comfortable with (or working to learn!).

This isn’t a Spanish curriculum per se, because it doesn’t teach the language explicitly, but I think it is an amazing resource for families who are learning Spanish or are heritage speakers. Knowing culture is a part of language learning, and Living Legends gives kids deep exposure to the (many) cultures of this region.

What will my kids learn in Living Legends?

Here are some of the questions that your kids will explore through this curriculum:

  • Why was poetry so important in Aztec culture, and what did Aztec poets write about? (If you love nature study, you’ll love this.)

  • How did ancient Mesoamericans discover corn and learn how to make tortillas with it? (Yes, you’ll get to make your own!).

  • What was a chasqui, and how were they used to send messages through the ancient Incan empire? (Get ready to do your very own chasqui race!)

Living Legends is largely focused on ancient legends and myths (hence the title…) and includes stories from Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Argentina.

How can I use Living Legends: Latin America?

Here are some ways that you might use Living Legends in your homeschool:

  • As a deep dive into Latin American culture and history

  • As a picture-book based literature unit

  • As a way to prepare your children to undertake Spanish language study

  • As a schedule for hands-on activities in a Spanish language class

  • As a supplement to an ancient history cycle

  • As a “gap semester” between other curricula

  • As an opportunity to learn more about your family’s heritage

Where can I find it?

Living Legends is available in my shop, and you can download a sample week for free, if you’d like to get an inside look at it!

Remember, though: the sale ends at midnight on Monday, August 29th, so don’t wait!
